In a collaboration between OHK and O4 Publica design studio, The Red Sea Revival is a five-installation transformative endeavor on the Red Sea. This visionary project introduces Guardian of the Sea and Rings of Hope, two installations that stand as beacons of change for the Red Sea's fringe reef by inspiring action, monetizing collective efforts, and instilling hope.
The Red Sea Revival is a monumental endeavor consisting of five distinct installations that span the entire coastline of the Red Sea. Each installation offers a unique and complementary experience, and the first of these captivating installations is known as "Guardian of the Sea," shown in the above photo.
When venturing to South Africa to immerse oneself in the wonders of nature, it is often emphasized that a visit would be incomplete without encountering the renowned Big Five. "Big Five" originally referred to the African lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo. While initially coined by big-game hunters over a century ago, it is now commonly used to promote safari experiences. However, in the Red Sea region of Egypt, a captivating safari experience awaits one that takes place in the sea rather than on land. Here, the ambition to check off a list of the Big Five does not drive visitors. Furthermore, even if creatures of the sea can be experienced as a compelling alternative, not everyone visiting the Red Sea can or desires to don dive gear and explore beneath the waves.
Enter the Red Sea Revival—an extraordinary experience that stands as the Red Sea's own version of the Big Five. It is designed to cater to individuals of all ages and does not require a dive certificate. Whether you embark on a boat or simply walk to the installations, the Red Sea Revival offers an inclusive and accessible encounter with the Red Sea. Like the Big Five concept, the Red Sea Revival comprises five distinct installations worthy of being checked off a list. These installations represent the pinnacle of the Red Sea's natural marvels. Each one offers a unique and captivating experience and environmental significance. Visitors can journey through the Red Sea Revival, exploring each installation and immersing themselves in each. This experience caters to the diver and the non-diver, inviting everyone to participate and appreciate. It encourages visitors to appreciate the unique treasures of the sea, regardless of their ability or inclination to scuba dive. Snorkeling opportunities abound around the installations of the Red Sea Revival, providing visitors with access to its captivating underwater world.
In the northern Red Sea, fringing reefs have widths ranging from 25 to 150 meters. In specific areas, such as between Marsa Alam and Shalatein, fringing reefs can extend further offshore, exceeding 0.5 kilometers. Along the Egyptian Red Sea coastline, the reef flats of fringing reefs cover nearly 2000 square kilometers with an average width of 250 meters.
These installations act as captivating gateways, inviting visitors to embark on a transformative journey through the Red Sea Revival experience. Each installation provides a distinct and complementary encounter, adding depth and variety to the exploration. As visitors venture from one installation to the next, they encounter diverse landscapes, ecosystems, and narratives that showcase the beauty and significance of the Red Sea. Each location has been thoughtfully selected to maximize the impact and comprehensively represent the region's natural wonders.
As dive boats and recreational boats pass by, visitors can get a closer look at the installation, which showcases the damage caused by climate and human activities and educates about the significance of preserving fragile marine ecosystems. The Red Sea Revival is designed as a multi-faceted, interactive experience. It features an intricate, immersive, and captivating experience that aims to engage visitors on multiple levels. At its outer shell, it showcases a remarkable artificial coral reef structure meticulously crafted using sustainable and eco-friendly materials. This intricately designed structure faithfully mimics the shape and form of a vibrant and thriving reef, offering a striking juxtaposition to the desolate and deteriorated reef that lies beneath it.
To ensure the utmost sustainability, the inner framework of the reef is lined with recycled ship sheets obtained from shipwrecks and shipyards where vessels are decommissioned. Given a new lease on life, these salvaged materials find purpose in creating the structure's foundation. By repurposing these materials, the Red Sea Revival breathes life into the damaged reef ecosystem and contributes to reducing waste and promoting environmental consciousness.
In addition to its captivating aesthetic appeal, the Guardian of the Sea installation serves a practical purpose as a lookout point, providing visitors with panoramic views of the Red Sea coastline and its vast expanse. Accessible through openings and designated observation coves, visitors can ascend into the installation and be greeted by various climbing areas, vistas, enclosures, and lookout points. These climbing areas allow visitors to explore various perspectives, unique experiences, and engaging exhibits. The photo above depicts various designs for climbing areas, vistas, enclosures, and opportunities to ascend and traverse the installation. These designs are carefully crafted to provide not only functional pathways but also spaces for contemplation and reflection, allowing visitors to connect deeply with the environment and appreciate its magnificence.
A series of interactive touchscreens are installed at the base of the installation, allowing visitors to explore the history and importance of the Red Sea's coral reefs. They can learn about these ecosystems' many benefits. In the interactive experience of the installation, digital interfaces enhance visitor engagement and create a gamified journey. Visitors can “scan” the installation with their phones through a specially designed mobile app, marking it as "visited" and unlocking unique content and features related to that specific location.
Visitors can share their experiences and achievements on social media platforms as they journey. The mobile app allows them to post updates, photos, and comments, creating a network effect that amplifies the reach and impact of the Red Sea Revival experience. Through sharing on social media, visitors become advocates for the installations, generating awareness and interest among their friends, followers, and online communities. The Red Sea Revival's gamification and social sharing contribute to its marketing strategy. By creating an engaging and interactive experience, the installations gain recognition and become attractive destinations for tourists and adventure-seekers. The gamified journey and achievement certificate adds an element of exclusivity and accomplishment, encouraging visitors to share their achievements widely, further increasing the exposure and reach of the Red Sea Revival. The widespread sharing and positive reviews create a ripple effect, attracting more visitors to join the journey and creating a virtuous cycle of awareness and interest. Furthermore, social media allows for user-generated content, with visitors sharing their unique perspectives, stories, and photographs from the installations. This authentic content acts as powerful marketing material, showcasing the real experiences and emotions of individuals who experienced the Red Sea Revival.
The photo showcases the Rings of Hope installation within the Red Sea Revival project. Against the backdrop of the sea horizon, a series of vibrant rings stretch across, symbolizing unity, resilience, and the collective effort to restore the Red Sea's coral reefs. The top surface of the rings is thoughtfully structured to support walking, with designated areas for photo opportunities. The modular design enables the addition of reef pieces away from the structural weight, ensuring stability and safeguarding the integrity of the installation.
As visitors approach the "Rings of Hope," they are greeted by a breathtaking sight. The rings rise above the water's surface, shimmering in the sunlight, inviting everyone to be part of this remarkable journey. The "Rings of Hope" concept involves active participation and collaboration. Visitors are invited to add their own unique touch to the installation, extending the rings by attaching additional tentacles and reef segments. It's an opportunity for each person to leave their mark on the unfolding story of restoration. As visitors engage in this interactive experience, they connect to a greater purpose. With every piece they add, they contribute to the growth and resilience of the artificial reef. It's a tangible representation of the collective efforts needed to heal and protect our precious marine ecosystems.
As visitors contribute to the growth of the "Rings of Hope," their additions are visually tracked, creating an immersive and dynamic experience. The Red Sea Revival mobile app lets visitors witness the rings' expansion. The app displays the evolving sizes of the rings, allowing visitors to observe their impact and the collective progress made. Accompanying the visual representation, educational snippets are provided through the app. As the rings expand, interactive counters measure the increase in size, providing fascinating facts and insights about the growth of coral reefs. Visitors gain a deeper understanding of the ecological significance, learning about the conditions necessary for coral growth and their contributions' positive effects on the reef ecosystem. The experience goes beyond the physical act of adding reef segments. It sparks conversations, ignites passions, and fosters a sense of stewardship. Visitors are encouraged to share their journey on social media, spreading the message of hope and inspiring others to join the cause.
The photo captures the modular design of the deconstructed coral reef elements that can be added to the Rings of Hope. Each element, 3D printed with fastening connectors, enables visitors to attach them in various configurations, creating a dynamic and evolving installation. This innovative approach enhances visual contributions and empowers visitors to actively shape the artwork, reinforcing a sense of ownership and responsibility in safeguarding Egypt's imperiled coral ecosystem.
Furthermore, as visitors engage with the installations, there is a monetization aspect that further supports the maintenance and conservation efforts of the Red Sea. When visitors scan their visit to each installation or acquire a new patch of reef to add, the app prompts them to contribute. This contribution sustains the installations and supports ongoing conservation initiatives, ensuring their long-term success. Providing visitors with the means to contribute financially allows them to actively participate in preserving the Red Sea Revival project. These contributions play a crucial role in the maintenance, expansion, and continuous improvement of the installations and the implementation of vital conservation programs.
In the past, distance and limited accessibility have presented challenges for individuals eager to contribute to conservation causes, particularly when the locations are remote or inaccessible. However, technological advancements and virtual platforms have begun to bridge this gap, enabling broader participation and engagement. This expansion of reach and inclusion addresses the long-standing issue of limited opportunities for global involvement in Red Sea conservation projects. Previously, those far from the Red Sea or even visitors often felt disconnected from the urgent need to protect its ecosystem. Now, individuals from any corner of the globe can join forces, share their involvement, and tangibly contribute to the ongoing efforts to protect and restore the Red Sea. Also, technology offers mechanisms for monitoring and reporting; it assures donors that their support is making a genuine difference in Red Sea conservation.
The monetization aspect creates a powerful cycle of support and empowerment. Visitors, recognizing the value of their experience and the significance of conservation, can share their contributions with others through social media. The app includes a referral feature, enabling visitors to spread the news of their contribution and invite others to support the Red Sea Revival project. By sharing their contribution with their networks, visitors become advocates for the cause, inspiring others to contribute and actively participate in the conservation efforts. This referral system amplifies the impact, creating a network effect that fosters widespread awareness and encourages more individuals to support the project financially.
In summary, The Red Sea Revival is an eye-catching and engaging installation designed to raise awareness about the environmental damage caused by climate, over-tourism, and human activity. It presents a sea-based safari experience in Egypt's Red Sea, consisting of five installations that offer awe-inspiring encounters. Accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities, the Red Sea Revival provides an inclusive and unforgettable opportunity to appreciate the beauty and significance of this magnificent ecosystem.
